During your consultation, the surgeon will first evaluate your health and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you. Your surgeon will need a complete medical history, so check your own records ahead of time and be ready to provide this information. Don’t hesitate to ask your surgeon any questions you may have during the initial consultation, including your concerns about the recommended treatment.
Your goals for the surgery will be discussed and you will be asked about certain medical conditions that could cause problems during or after the procedure, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood-clotting problems, or the tendency to develop large scars. Be sure to tell the surgeon if you have had any previous surgery, if you smoke, or if you take any drugs or medications — including aspirin or other drugs that affect clotting.
If you decide to proceed with your surgery procedure, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique, the recommended type of anesthesia, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, the risks and the costs involved. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results of surgery.
WHERE YOUR SURGERY WILL BE PERFORMED
Your surgery procedure will generally be done in a surgeon’s office-based facility or an outpatient surgery center. However, it is occasionally done in the hospital.
ANESTHESIA USED FOR THE PROCEDURE
Our surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia, in which case you’ll sleep through the entire operation, however some minor cosmetic procedures can be performed under local anesthesia.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY
The immediate post-operative experience for a patient who has had a cosmetic surgery procedure will differ from patient to patient.
Patients may experience some numbness and temporary discomfort around the incision, which can be controlled with prescription medication.
The stitches or staples used to close the incisions are usually removed within a week.
GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
Healing is a gradual process and although you should be up and about in a day or two, plan on taking it easy for at least the first week after surgery.
Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities.
A small amount of fluid draining from your surgical wound, or some crusting, is normal. If you have any unusual symptoms, such as bleeding or severe pain, don’t hesitate to call your doctor.
YOUR NEW LOOK
For many people, the result of their cosmetic surgery procedure can be satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their new appearance. You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body quite soon after surgery. However, improvement will become even more apparent when most of the swelling has subsided, usually after about two to six weeks depending on your particular procedure. If your expectations are realistic, you will probably be very pleased with the results of your surgery.
Even if you believe you are functioning well after your procedure, it is important that you follow-up as directed with your plastic surgeon to assess the progress of your procedure through regularly scheduled follow-up appointments.
Your decision to have a cosmetic surgery procedure is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it. If you’ve met your goals, then your surgery is a success.
GETTING THE ANSWERS YOU NEED
Individuals considering a cosmetic surgery procedure often feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of options and techniques being promoted today. However, your plastic surgeon can help. In deciding which the treatment approach is right for you, your doctor will consider effectiveness, safety, cost and appropriateness for your needs. This is called surgical judgment, a skill that is developed through surgical training and experience. Your doctor also uses this judgment to prevent complications; to handle unexpected occurrences during surgery; and to treat complications when they occur.
Your surgeon’s education and training have helped to form his or her surgical judgment, so take the time to do some background checking. Patients are encouraged to consider a doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). By choosing a plastic surgeon who is certified by the ABPS, a patient can be assured that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of additional residency – usually three years of general surgery (or its equivalent) and two years of plastic surgery. To be certified by the ABPS, a doctor must also practice surgery for two years and pass comprehensive written and oral exams.
PREPARING FOR YOUR SURGERY
Your surgeon will give you specific instructions to prepare for the procedure, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Carefully following these instructions will help your surgery and your recovery proceed more smoothly.
You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks and potential complications of your surgery. There may be a waiting period of several days to weeks from the time of your consent to the day of surgery.
Whether your surgery procedure is done in an outpatient facility or in the hospital, you should arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery, and to help you out for a day or two.
